8vo - 20 x 13.5 cm.; xxiii - 481 - (7) pp. Red cloth over boards with gilt lettering on the spine. This is the fifth edition. A series of essays written at various times and then "carefully revised, here abridged, there enlarged, but they have not been recast, nor have the notes of time and circumstance been erased." Dr. Fairbairn was the Principal of Mansfield College at Oxford. Four pages of publisher's adverts at the back. The externals show only mild wear thought the cloth on the spine is very faded with the gilt lettering still bright, as is the cloth on the front board on the margins. The end papers are browned otherwise the interior is clean and the binding is very good and supple. A clear and removable archival cover has been fitted.
