8vo - 23.5 x 14.5 cm.; viii - 509 (1) pp. Green cloth over bevelled boards with gilt lettering on the spine. First published in 1841, this is the second edition published with the addition of a memoir, pages 9 though to 101, of the author by his son. Illustrated with a tissue protected frontis of the author, a tissue protected engraving of "Redjacket" facing page 103, an engraving of "George Washington, President, 1792" facing page 194, an engraving of the Seneca Mission Church facing page 438, and lastly an engraving of Redjacket's house in the Seneca village facing page 453. Seven appendices (A through H), an eleven page index to the text, a half page index to the appendices and a 1 page list of errata. The externals show moderate wear to the board fore corners (rubbed and worn) and the spine tips (frayed with small tears) along with some staining and light scuffing to the cloth on the back board. The interior is clean and the binding is very good with the following exceptions. The fore edge margins of the first 10 leaves, including the front free end paper are stained (foxed) with no effect on the text. The two tissue guard protectors have the image offset onto them. The gutter between the frontis piece and the title page is beginning to separate with some tears to the gutter margin of the tissue protector. Previous owners name and date (H. B. Skelton, 1869), on the front free end paper with the initials (HBS) repeated on the first page of the memoir and initials (EBS) on the first page of text for the actual book (page 103). A clear and removable archival cover has been fitted.
