12mo - 19 x 12 cm.; viii - 424 pp. Dark brown cloth over boards with gilt lettering on the spine and blind stamped border rules on the front and back boards. From the title page: "With introductory remarks and an appendix containing annotations by Richard Whately DD, Bishop of Dublin. Conveniently arranged for a text book. Third edition". The three parts are entitled "Part First - of the direct historical evidence of Christianity, and wherein it is distinguished from the evidence alleged for other miracles", "Part Second - of the auxiliary evidences of Christianity", "Part Third - a brief consideration of some popular objections". A recent previous owner's name on the front free end paper. Original, or the first, previous owner's bookplate, a very simple affair belonging to "Orestes Pierce", on the front paste down end paper and a second plate on the back paste down end paper "Gift from Henry Pierce". The end papers are tanned as are some gatherings for the paper quality varies throughout. The externals show mild and general wear with the exception of the board corners and the spine head and tail which are worn. Otherwise the interior is clean and the binding is very solid and sound.
