An historical novel about seventeenth century Persia, a Carmelite friar, Juan Thaddeus, the Shah, Abbas the Great, and a lovely Circassian princess and convert, Shamala. Groseclose (1899-1983) was an American economist, statesman and author who was appointed Treasurer-General of Persia by the Iranian parliament in 1943. Out of his experience came several histories and novels including one that received a National Book Award (Ararat). A clean, tight volume with some page browning and a former owner`s name on front free endpaper. Dust jacket lightly soiled with a bit of edgewear.
