8vo - 22 x 14 cm.; viii - [4] - 284 pp. Pale red/orange cloth over boards with gilt lettering on spine. From the author's preface of 1948: "(this book) is merely an attempt to trace the course of Newman's thought as it appears in his published writings and letters, some of which are here printed for the first time, up to that point at which he left our Communion". This is a later edition (second?) as two appendices have been added which contain material made available from Oriel College. Illustrated with nine black and white plates, all either sketches or drawings. Previous onwer's book plate, a handsome one at that, on the front paste down end paper. Very mild foxing on both free end papers, otherwise clean and tight with the externals showing mild shelf wear at the board corners and the spine tips.
