The interviews were part of the Works Projects Administration project which transcribed thousands of pages of stories of former slaves in the late 1930's. Howell has taken this mass of material and put together a very readable series of booklets giving a picture of slavery in the United States. Along with the life stories of a few individuals, each booklet also has brief excerpts from many others, two glossaries for clarification, Terminology and Dialect, and photos scattered throughout the text. This is the second booklet in the series. This copy has some light wear and former owner's initials in red marker on the front cover.
