8vo - 21.5 x 14 cm.; 485 pp. Brown calf with gilt lettering on a black panel in a six panel spine and ruled gilt borders on front, blind stamped borders on back with blind stamped trefoils on the front at the corners. Patterned end papers with a bookseller's label affixed to the lower fore corner of the front paste down end paper. The top edge of the text block is gilt. Printed by arrangement with the Bodley Head by Brun in a limited edition of 150 copies of which this is number 31. Illustrated with a black and white frontis and eight other half tone prints all on coated paper with six full page black and white line drawings plus seven half page maps of the inset type and one full page map. Four page appendix of "List of Emperors", three pages of bibliographic acknowledgements and a comprehensive index at the back. Mild bumping and wear to the board corners and like wear to the spine tips. The leather on the back board shows a few scuffs and small scratches. The interior is very clean with a solid and sound binding.
