12mo - 18.5 x 12 cm.; xx - 204 pp. Blue cloth with gilt lettering on the spine and the author / title blindstamped on the front board. There were 3 editions published in 1930: Oates & Washbourne, Benziger, and Benziger Brothers. An educated supposition here - The first edition is the one from Benziger Brothers as the introduction from Thorold, though present in all three editions, was not made note of in the Benziger Brothers edition. Translated from the French by Charlotte Balfour with a preface by Rene Bazin and an introduction by Algar Thorold. The approbations are dated November 1929 while Thorold's introduction is dated October 20, 1924. There was and still is some controversy with regards Charles de Foucauld's life and writings. His writings were not meant for the general public but rather for the Mussulman people of the sub-Saharan region and were ordered so as to be comprehended easily by them. The subsequent editing and publishing of them has led to many problems as the order of their writing is of great importance. This book consists chiefly of extracts from "Meditations on the Gospels" and any extracts from "The Gospel Preached to the Poor of the Sahara" have been excluded. The writings then reflect his pure and simple spirit and most certainly highlight the diverse nature of the saints of the Church. No small wonder that the appeal of this man is so universal. "I must buckle to in the life of faith" may seem a trite thing to say but not when said by Charles. The condition of the book - Minor wear to the externals with some fraying of the spine crown. Previous owner's name ( a local parish priest) stamped on the ffep, the title page, and the back paste down. Bookseller's stamp present on the ffep also. A quite nice copy of the rare first edition of what has become a spiritual classic. A clear and removable archival cover has been fitted.
