The American supplement section (pages 267 to 300) has the music with both the melody and accompaniment. The remainder has the lyrics or words only. Following that section is a 19 page chorus section, a 19 page index to the songs, a 2 page index to the chorus section, a 6 page metrical index then lastly, 2 pages with the doctrines and the mission of the Salvation Army. Seventy-two Irish songs with words, melody, and piano accompaniment with notes by Cronin, author of "Irish Footnotes to Shakespeare" and lecturer on national folk-music. All twelve full-page black and white illustrations by Carey are present. Mild shelf wear to the externals, the free end papers are browned, and the binding is a tad shaken though still quite sturdy. The interior is clean and the illustrations (printed on one side only with the obverse being blank) are very good. A clear and removable archival cover has been fitted. 4715

8vo - 23.5 x 15.5 cm.; 96 pp. Green cloth over chamfered boards with embossed gold lettering on front set in a black embossed decoration. Back board has the same stamped decorations with no colour having been added. The date of publication is not known but most probably in the early 1870's as Robert Dalglish, a weaver and composer from Pollokshaws in County Renfrew, Scotland lived from 1806 to 1875. Previous owner's name in pencil and dated 1888 on the front free end paper. A selection of 20 choral pieces in four parts - Treble, Alto, Tenor, and Bass. From the list of contents: "God Is My Rock" - anthem, "Now Unto the King Eternal" - motett, "O Lord I Will Praise Thee" - anthem, "Holy Lord God of Hosts" - sanctus, "God Is Our Refuge" - anthem, "Behold I Show You a Mystery" - anthem, "Eternal God, Almighty King" - anthem, "Great and Marvellous" - anthem, "The Morning Breaks" - anthem, "Hosanna to the Son of David" - motett, "I Heard a Great Voice" - anthem, "Awake, Put on Thy Strength" - anthem, "Thou Lamp of Intellectual Ray" - anthem, "I Will Extol Thee" - anthem, "Peace Be With You All" - motett, "Look Not upon the Wine" - anthem, "Sleepers Awake" - anthem, "The Lord Reigneth" - anthem, "God Be Merciful" - anthem, "The Mother's Last Song" - motett. Both front and back end papers are foxed with some foxing on the title page also. The binding is slightly shaken but not loose and the text pages are clean. Externally the volume shows minor wear to the corners and spine crown/ heel. The stampings are sharp and where coloured / inked, they are bright and crisp. An extremely scarce collection of sacred music from the late 1800's and in what appears to be a Presbyterian or Methodist stance. A handsome volume with very good presentation. From the title page: "A collection of original and selected pieces for pipe and reed organs, embracing contributions from the following well-known and renowned composers . . . (a partial list of 21 composers follows)". Eighty-two pieces in total with an alphabetical index provided on the last preliminary page, the verso of the title page. The spine has been re-enforced with a black cloth tape and a linen thread sewn on the flat, 1 cm in from the edge. The interior is relatively clean with some pages having worn fore edges (small chips and closed tears) that do not affect any text and the fore edge margins of most pages are soiled from use. This is publication #10696 from Schirmer with no date given though probably turn of the century. An Oratorio based on several scripture passages though also including two hymns, one by Bonar and the second by Neale along with three verses from the Te Deum and a verse from Milton. Scored for a variety of voices (bass, tenor, soprano, mezzo-soprano, contralto, treble, alto) and a full choir with smaller choruses. Previous owner's name on the front free end paper and on the top of page 1, the first full page of music. The pages show mild age toning, a small tear in the front end paper hinge and the externals show moderate wear to the corners and spine tips (rubbed and worn). The gilt lettering is quite bright. 19750
