4to ; Iv - 630 - xvi - 640 pp. Black leather on spine and corners with green cloth on boards. Gilded spine panels (5) with gilt decoration on front board and previous owner's name in gilt lettering below. Moderate rubbing to the extremities with scuffing to the boards. All text block edges are gilt. Front end paper hinge is starting with a small tear in the reinforcing cloth of the interior hinge, many tissu protectors have been replaced. Interior is very clean with minimal foxing (very minimal) . Many of the original tissu protectors are browned. For a volume this massive and heavy, the condition is very good indeed. Two page preface, 2 page plan of the dictionary, 2 pages of acknowledgements and 2 pages of abbreviations used, take up the preliminary pages. Partial page of corrigenda (corrections) at the back, 16 in number. The dictionary text is printed 2 colums per page. Minor shelf wear to the externals and both the front and back hinges have a wee bit of play in them due to the weight of the text block. Otherwise clean and solid. 26593

Some rather nice blind stampings on the corners and centered on both front and back boards. The spine has been repaired professionally with a linen backing visible at the crown. The spine leather itself is rubbed and faded though quite readable. Board corners are rubbed and worn. The text block is mildly shaken with one of the signatures in the centre of the block sitting proud though 'tis not loose. All text block edges are gilt and still quite bright. Previous owner's gift inscription (dated 1877) on the verso of the front free end paper. A clear and removable archival cover has been fitted. 7605

A treatise using examples of legislation, historical occurrences, statistics, extracts from speeches and letters all designed to give weight to the cause of Irish Nationalism as put forth by the National Land League. Both front and back hinges are starting, usual library markings present with the addition of a black cloth tape being affixed, by way of a previous repair, to the externals in the manner of a half bound binding. It would appear that new end papers were inserted at the same time. The interior is quite clean with some age toning to the free page margins and the text block is sound.; Ex-Library 14261

This biography concentrates on the political side of Redmond's life making extensive use of his political papers as a major resource. Redmond was the president of the Parnellite Party from 1891 to 1918 when he died and was well known for his advocacy of Home Rule for Ireland always seeking peaceful, though forceful means. He never lived to see his life long ambition realized. Previous owner's bookplate with inked date and place on the front free end paper. The corners are bumped with a trace of shelf wear. Binding is solid and square with the text block edges being darkened. It is noted that many of the plates are two page spreads these are tipped in being pasted to the marginal gutters of the preceding page thus allowing them to lie flat as many are reproductions of handwritten notes.
