The library markings are an accession number in white on the lower spine, the library name stamped on all three text block edges, a library bookplate overstamped 'withdrawn' on the front paste down end paper, two stamps one of which is a blind stamp on the title page and one last stamp on the tail margin of page 246. Previous owner's name on the front free end paper and the head margin of the title page. The back hinge is starting and the two blank pages just before the back free end paper have been removed. The externals show mild shelf and usage wear with moderate wear to the spine tips. Sounds a bit on the rough side but tisn't in spite of all this. The text block is sound and quite clean and with a fitted and removable archival cover over the boards, the book presents well.; Ex-Library 23401

Johnson (1854-1928) was a Church of England missionary in Africa for fifty-three years. Among other accomplishments, he translated the Bible and the Book of Common Prayer into Chinyanja. Illustrated with black and white photographs, mapped endpapers (the front is the slave routes from Nyasa to the slave ports of East Africa, the back is the dioceses of the Universities' Mission to Central Africa) and a map within the text (the "Sherriff's" last trip), along extracts from his letters and an index.
