One of the "Revue de la Vie Chrétienne" books, the first series. Illustrated with several full page woodcuts, quite beautiful too, and many smaller decorative woodcut insets. Previous owner's name (Dominican House) stamped on the front cover, the first page and the title page. The front cover has a small crumple on the top fore corner and the covers are age toned or browned. Otherwise the book is clean with a solid binding. One doesn't usually buy a book like this for the illustrations but the grace and beauty of them add immeasurably to the content. 28222

All text block edges are gilt with full rounds at the fore corners. Two page prologue by the author in Latin: "Auctoris prologii quaedam excerpta". The text has been translated and adapted by Rev. F. J. O'Sullivan from the Latin original "Memoriale Vitae Sacerdotalis" published in the late 1700's. Fr. O'Sullivan tells of this book having been used as a text book at the seminary in Maynooth, Ireland in the early 1800's and indeed it was commonly used in many seminaries of that day. Seventy-seven short chapters each dealing with a specific facet, duty, or characteristic of the priestly life. Sepia tone frontis piece of Christ the High Priest. The spine has mild wear to the tips and some light wear/rubbing to the spine itself. All gilt work (lettering and edge gilding) is still quite bright and crisp.
