In Fraktur German, it would have been printed for the Pennsylvania Dutch (German) residents of that state. Lots of illustrations, index. Illustrated paper-covered boards with cloth spine. Fo - 37 x 19 cm.; Unpaginated though with16 pages including the covers in a saddle stapled binding. Gabriel publication #286. Full colour front cover, blank back cover. Four of the interior pages are in full colour also, the rest of the illustrations are in black and white. Previous owner's dated name (Xmas - 1917) on page 3. The artist is not credited. The front and back covers are separated at the spine fold in the bottom half. Moderate wear to the edges with some minor soiling to the front. The interior is very clean and overall, this child's book is in a remarkable condition considering the readers that it was produced for. 22868

12mo - 18 x 12 cm.; iv - 176 pp. Pictorial paper covered boards with a black cloth spine over a flat stapled binding. A co-ordinated and complete approach to spelling and pronounciation designed specifically for Catholic schools. The preliminaries are missing as is page i / ii and the title and copyright page. Previous owner's name on the front paste down dated Septemebr 18, 1885. Both paste down end papers are replete with addresses, notes and doodles while the main body of the text is surprisingly clean and the text block binding is solid. The covers and integral spine appear to have been re-attached at some point. The covers themselves are soiled with some red doodling on the front and the board edges are worn. Unusual as these books rarely survived the use they received in the classrooms. 14748

There is no publishing date but a signature on the ffep is dated 1883. Book is illustrated with wonderful lithographs. The boards are a green cloth with an intricately blind stamped design on front, back and spine. The centre panel of the front and the spine are gilt. The boards show wear and some soiling, with a small tear at the top of spine. All text block edges are gilt. The binding is slightly shaken with some mild foxing present throughout. A quite handsome little volume. A clear and removable archival cover has been fitted. 1457

No date given and also no author given for "Charlie Foster". The story "The Coveted Squirrel" is attributed to Mrs. George Cupples. An advertising page follows the first story and three advertising pages follow the second story. Illustrated with two full page black and white line drawings and three smaller cuts throughout the text. Gray paper covered boards with an illustration on the front of a pelican. Front and back boards show some staining on the fore edges. The spine is worn at the top to the text block and the bottom 3 cm piece is torn on the front joint. Otherwise the interior is clean and the binding is quite solid. A clear and removable archival cover has been fitted. 8897

8vo (oblong) - 21.5 x 22.5 cm.; Unpaginated with thirty two pages. Pictorial cloth over boards with a matching dust jacket. First published in 1975, this is the second Dial Press printing. The text is by Carol Carrick and the illustrations are by Donald Carrick. This is the library binding with a inner linen hinge. The pictorial cloth shows some minor 'bubbling' or lifting that I would suggest is a binding fault. Otherwise the book is very clean and sound. The dust jacket shows moderate edge wear with small chips, closed tears and associated creasing. 22597

8vo - 20.5 x 14 cm.; xi - (5) - 287 pp. Black cloth over boards with red lettering and art work (both quite bright and crisp) on spine and front board. Illustrated end papers both front and back. Coloured frontis and 4 full page black and white illustrations along with chapter head pieces and the occasional smaller cut for chapter endings, 14 b/w illustrations in all. The title page shows some minor foxing as do the text block edges. Bookseller's label affixed to the back paste down end paper. Otherwise the volume is clean with a solid binding. The unclipped dust jacket is worn and chipped on the edges with a triangular piece gone from the head of the spine taking with it most of the title and author lettering. An adventure of honor that inculcates the principles of the Boy Scout Oath and Law. Foreword by James West of the Boy Scout of America in a rather nice copy with the now, quite scarce dust jacket. The book was awarded the main prize in the "Boy's Life" competition. 17417

Based on a real diary, this is a portrait of Mary Lou McGuire's last year on the island of Oderin in Placentia Bay, Newfoundland. In 1910 the McGuire family learned the local island school would be closed and all would have to leave the island. "Seasons of the Sea is a loving look back at the world of the Newfoundland outport . . ." Library markings include spine stickers on dust jacket, name stamps and attachments on endpapers.
