Illustrated with 35 pages of black and white photographs printed on a coated paper stock. Various lists of workers and committee members are present. A few fore edges of the pages are yet unopened. The book shows mild wear to the externals (fore corners and spine tips) and with a faded (or mottled from the sun) spine. The interior is clean and the binding is good. Donovan, Brig. Maurice Pope, R. T. Bowman, John Bird, J. M. Minifie, Milo J. Warner, Rev. John Sutherland Bonnell, Helen Heitt, Joseph C. Harsch, L. B. Pearson, Saville R. Davis, Elisabeth Dinsdale, Betty Wason, Albert E. Altherr, Humphrey Cobb, Diana Forbes-Robertson, and Arthur Beverley Baxter. Each piece is led into with a small b/w vignette head piece drawing of the author. The externals show light to very moderate wear and soiling with a neatly inked "Book No. 1" on the spine. Spine is faded, front and back boards are spotted and stained mostly on lower halves. 2" tear in spine gutter on front at top. Front hinge is a bit loose otherwise the binding is quite tight. Corners are bumped and worn. Text edges are browned with some foxing throughout the volume. Illustrated with full page glossy plates each with protective tissue. Some staining on tissue overlays but does not appear to be foxing. Some dampstain on first few pages at top on spine side. This particular volume was not directly authored by Barnes, but rather was prepared under his direction by J. J. Woodward. Barnes was the Surgeon General of the US Army at the time and Woodward was a surgeon in same. This is the second issue of what is also known as the Second Medical Volume. The spine lists the publisher as "Surgeon General's Office". 1034

A practical book that arose out of a response to the government's appeal to convert old material into useful articles, this book deals with the salvaging of old garments and using the material to make new items to be distributed by the British War Relief Society of the United States of America. Grace Garman was the chairman of the Pennsylvania Committee of the Salvage Sewing Department of the same Society. Well illustrated with patterns and diagrams along with conversion sheets (what that is old turned into what that is new and needed), organization charts, production suggestions, record keeping, and so on. The covers show mild wear and soiling, the tail edge of the text block is lightly soiled while the interior is clean and the stapled binding is solid. 20379

Edward Johnston was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Infantry, United States Army and looks at the military readiness of the US Army as it prepares to enter the Second World War. Six page glossary and a 13 page index. The library was an Officer's Mess with fairly minmal and neatly done markings - call number on spine, ownership note on the front paste down end paper and a pocket on the back paste down end paper. The board fore corners are mildly bumped and some of the gilt lettering on the front board has been rubbed off. The interior is clean and the binding is solid.
