Introduction by Eugene Kevane and a presentation (the official pronouncement accompanying the publication) by Silvio Cardinal Oddi. This catechism, often known as the "Catechism of the Council of Trent", was first published in 1566, delayed by the death of Pope Pius IV as the catechism was ready early in 1565 after the work on it was begun in January of 1564. This present edition is based largely on the McHugh / Callan edition of 1923 and its immediate predecessor, the Donovan edition of 1829. Reference to the original is via the Marietti "editio stereotypa" of 1930, a faithful reproduction of the original text. This book is a companion to the previously published "Teaching the Catholic Faith Today", a compilation of relevant papal documents. This is the " . . . twenty-eighth edition carefully revised and harmonized with the Code of Canon Law by Father Emile Jombart SJ . . .". The translation from the French by Fr. William H. McCabe SJ. First published in 1859 (Catechisme des voeux a l'usage des personnes consacrees a Dieu dans l'etat religieux) with a new edition (edited and revised) in 1919, this translation is made from the 28th French edition of 1922 with editorial changes that are in form only with no change to the substance or content in the 1919 edition. (A previous English translation was published in 1868.) The prefaces from both the first and the 1919 edition are included. Previous owner's name in pencil on the front free end paper. The externals show very mild edge wear and like scuffing to the cloth. Else the book is in a near fine condition. A clear and removable archival cover has been fitted. 19348

Drinkwater was a diocesan inspector of schools in Birmingham and as such, developed the "Sower" scheme of catechetical instruction. This volume includes 25 essays, all of which had been previously published in various journals from 1926 to 1934. The book shows a whisper of shelf wear to the externals. Previous owner's name blacked out on both the half title and the title page. Otherwise very clean with a sound binding. The dust jacket, a rather fragile affair to start with, is quite worn on the edges, darkened on the spine and with material missing on the spine folds and the top edge of the back panel. 20233
