Prepatory Note by Josephine Ward, Introduction by Wilfrid Ward, and an appendix, Father Maturin's Last Sermon described by Arthur I. Kegan. Basil William Maturin (1847-1915) was an Anglican priest who later converted to Roman Catholicism. He died on the RMS Lusitania during World War I. In the midst of the panic after the ship was hit by a torpedo, Father Maturin strove to keep people calm, give Absolution, and help women and children into lifeboats. Then (according to Wilfrid Ward) "he stood waiting for the end. . . put on no lifebelt . . . simply awaited death." Purple cloth-covered boards with gilt spine lettering. Spine is sunned, boards lightly soiled with some edgewear, former owner's name on front endpaper; binding is sturdy, text pages are clean. 18894

12mo - 17.5 x 12 cm.; vi - 225 - 39 pp. Dark brown cloth over boards with gold lettering on spine. A collection of 3 'hypothetical' dialogues concerning the nature of personal religious inquiry. Library markings consist of a call number on spine, pocket on the back paste down end paper, and library stamps on blank pages at front and back. The back end paper hinge is gone with the mull showing and the binding is shaken. Wear to the externals with rubbed and bumped corners and a worn spine crown and heel. The binding is cocked. The last 39 pages are publisher's adverts. Uncommon in this edition though reprints of one of the individual dialogues are seen upon occassion.; Ex-Library 11059
