12mo - 19 x 13 cm.; 257 pp. First published in 1953, this is a reprint. Oxford Children's Library edition. Sutcliff (1920-1992) was one of the best writers of historical fiction for children. In this story, she wrote of two friends, Simon Carey and Amias Hannaford, on opposing sides of the English Civil War (1642-1651, Parliamentarians or Roundheads versus the Royalists). Red paper-covered boards with silver spine lettering. Light soiling on text block edge, bit on foxing on endpapers, a book store's stamp and inked price on front free endpaper; text pages clean and binding tight.
