Twain, Mark Mark Twain's Sketches, New and Old.
Hartford, Connecticut The American Publishing Co. 1875 First Edition Hardcover Good Illustrated by Williams
8vo - 21.5 x 16.5 cm; 320 pages. Blue cloth over boards with black and gilt stampings on front and spine, black only on back. First edition, second state as repeated footnote is absent form p. 120 and Hospital Days piece, though listed in contents is absent from p. 299. Previous owner's name on ffep. Boards are worn on corners, minimal wear on edges with exception of front head edge which has a small closed chip/tear near spine. Spine top is worn through cloth, bottom is good with moderate wear (creasing only) . Spine edges are good and the gilt stamping is still bright with very minor rubbing on both front board and spine. The book presents well. The interior is clean with one exception. The bottom fore edge corners of all pages have a moisture stain that is 2" on the fore edge and 3" on the tail edge. It does not affect the preliminaries nor the boards and lessens towards the back of the book. It has led to a slight crimping of the paper in the affected corner. The hinges are still very tight with some paper weakness becoming evident at both front and back end papers. A nice and tight copy with bright exterior of one of Twain's earlier works.
