1 Maritain, Jacques Confession de Foi.
New York, New York Editions De La Maison Francaise 1941 Softcover Good+
8vo - 22 x 17 cm.; 42 - [6] pp. Ivory covers with a yap on the fore edge of the covers. Originally published by Simon and Schuster in 1939 as one of the reflections in "I Believe" - a collection edited by Clifton Fadiman and put together so as to provide ". . . a spiritual and intellectual last will and testament to our generation . . ." Rather humbling to read now. The essay is a faithful translation of the original English of 1939 with some minor additions. As to condition: the covers are soiled, the yapped fore edge is creased and the fore edge corners are splayed. Interior is clean. This edition was done at the behest of Maritain and was limited to 2000 copies done on a heavyweight cream paper (Midwood), this being copy #567 and printed by Albert Martin of New York. 11448

3 Maritain, Jacques Le Crépuscule de la Civilisation. (The Twilight of Civilization).
Montreal, Quebec Editions De L'Arbre 1941 Softcover Very Good
12mo - 19 x 12 cm.; 93 pp. Light tan wraps with red and black lettering. Second edition. Volume 1 of the "Problemes Actuels" from this publisher. An expanded and edited version of a conference held in Paris at the theatre Marigny on February 8th, 1939. The foreword written by Maritain, is dated in Chicago of the following year. Text is in French. General soiling to the covers and wear to the cover edges. Reminds me of Houselander's "The War is the Passion", when Catholic thinkers tried to make sense of the hell visited upon earth by the conflict of the Second World War, the purgative writings of the twentieth century. 11447

4 Maritain, Jacques Notebooks.
Albany, New York. Magi Books. 1984 0873430506 / 9780873430500 Hardcover Very Good
8vo - 23 x 15 cm.; 311 pp. Green paper over boards with silver gilt lettering on spine and front. The copyright is held by the University of Notre Dame and the book is a translation of "Carnet de Notes" first published in 1965 and now translated by Joseph W. Evans. Maritain's foreword from 1964 and preface from 1954 are present. The notes are organized into eight chapters followed by three appendices and the original French texts to the translated poems along with two Lonegran type charts: "On the notion of love" and "On the pursuit of the perfection of charity". Reading through the book in a haphazard fashion, it is an intensely personal book with a tinge of melancholy running throughout. Not a melancholy that leads to despair but rather one that leads to a gratified contentment that only a peasant from Garonne could possess and recount. Inked note and price on the front free end paper, distributor's label affixed over the publisher's name on the title page and externally, very mild shelf wear to the corners and spine tips. Sans dust jacket as issued. 18842
