Both the book and the unclipped dust jacket show slight shelf wear on the edges with some minor soiling on the back panel of the jacket. 8vo - 21 x 14 cm.; xxxi - [3] - 345 - [5] pp. Light beige linnen over boards with black and pale blue lettering on spine and front board. Signed and dated (17-III-89) by Mark Helprin on the title page. This anthology series is under the general editorship of Shannon Ravenel. The introduction (The Canon Under Siege - 20 pages) is an essay by Helprin on the state of modern short story writing and fiction in general. Twenty short stories are included in the selection all of which had been previously published in various periodicals. Sixteen pages of biographical notes of the contrubutors are included at the back as well as four pages of other distinguished short stories from 1987 and a list of editorail offices for various and sundry literary journals. The book is clean with a solid binding showing surface foxing on the text block's head and fore edges. The unclipped dust jacket shows very mild edge wear and a sunned spine which is now more green than blue compared to the front and back panels of the jacket. All in all, a very presentable and handsome copy.; Signed by Editor 17523
