Aspazija (Elza Plieksane. nee Rozenberga) Dzeju Izlase Riga, Latvia Zelta Abele 1940 Hardcover Good 24mo - 14.5 x 10.5 cm.; 103 - [9] pp. The text is in Latvian. Limited edition of 1200 copies designed and executed by Andreja Eglisa of 11 Latgale Street in Riga. This copy is not numbered, that line being blank. A collection of 77 poems by Aspazija (Elza Plieksane. nee: Rozenberga), 1865-1943. A neo-romantic Latvian poet and playwright. Exiled to Russia at the turn of the century, she returned and lived in exile in Switzerland until the end of WW I, then returned to Latvia where she was a member of the Latvian Parliament until 1934 being active in the feminist movement. The title of this book translates as "Poetry Favorites". Signed in pencil by the poet on the signature line - p. (4), facing the title page. Light beige cloth with a decorated front board, brown lettering surrounded by a beige on green folk art border of birds and vines (Latvian?). Illustrated end papers in pastel shades with a nationalistc (and slightly romantic) theme. The last four blank pages contain a neatly transcribed, in ink, of a poem by Tagore translated into Latvian. Previous owner's name with date (1941) and place on the first blank page. The externals show mild wear and soiling. Printed on a watermarked paper that shows a mild marginal browning throughout with occasional soiling and light foxing, this being mainly on the page margins. One instance of marginalia is noted, on page 81, a blue pencil mark (a squiggle really) next to the four line poem Divi Varti. The binding is a tad shaken with some separation between the gatherings though it is still quite solid. 19615 Price:
