1502 Catherine of Siena. (Algar Thorold - translator). The Dialogue of the Seraphic Virgin Catherine of Siena Dictated by Her, While in a State of Ecstasy, to Her Secretaries, and Completed in the Year of Our Lord 1370. Together with an Account of Her Death by an Eye-Witness.
Wheaton, Illinois. (Wheaton College.) 1994 Softcover Near Fine
4to - 28 x 21.5 cm.; (2) - 135 pp. Blue paper covers with a black paper re-enforcing strip on the spine. First published in 1907 by Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co of London and I have listed the publisher as Wheaton College as being the present publisher. Not entirely correct as one can see from the following. The title page continued: "Translated from the original Italian, and preceded by an introduction on the life and times of the saint by Algar Thorold. A new and abridged edition. Digitized by Harry Plantinga (of Wheaton College), 1994. The etext is in the public domain." (This is a print version of that etext I would assume.) Fr. Thorold's introduction runs for 10 pages and then four of the Saint's treatises are presented: "A Treatise of Divine Providence", "A Treatise of Discretion", "A Treatise of Prayer", and a "Treatise of Obedience". The account of the Saint's death is the text of a letter of 5 pages from Ser Barduccio di Piero Canigiani written to Sister Catherine Petriboni and entitled "Transit of the Seraphic Virgin, Saint Catherine of Siena". The black binding paper on the spine stops short of the tail of the spine and it is obvious that was originally done like this. 29862

From the author's prologue dated 1923: "The only thing then that is of any consequence to us is to learn our avocation of eternal happiness . . . the whole spiritual life is thus but the art of finding God. . . . This third volume of thirty-three mediations tries to show that the thing is possible and that the conditions for success are fixed beforehand." My impression is that these meditations are based on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius which is no great surprise as Fr. Charles is himself a Jesuit. Previous owner's name blind stamped on the front free end paper, the spine is quite faded and the binding is just a tad shaken though still quite solid. The interior is clean. 27577
